Traditional Bodywork & Sobada

Working the body through intentional touch is one of the most ancient forms of medicine.

My bodywork and sobada practice are rooted in Traditional Mexican Medicine principles, my spirituality, and midwifery care.

It is my greatest joy to offer these services that are so close to my heart. I deeply believe in the power and effectiveness of skilled bodywork to relieve pain and tension, as well as harmonize the physical, energetic, and spiritual bodies. These practices were learned and cultivated long-term through direct apprenticeships, trainings, and my midwifery program.

  • Sobada is a traditional Mesoamerican healing practice that has similar elements to deep tissue massage and energy work. Sobada also has a direct connection to the organ system, especially those housed in the abdomen. Sobada works with the physical, spiritual, and emotional dimensions of the organs, helping improve both their physical and spiritual alignment. Each session ends with the practitioner sharing a general assessment about what was observed from the body. Generally, this practice helps regulate the nervous system, relieve pain, clear and move stagnant energy, and help bring organs back into place. It can also improve menstrual symptoms, aid digestion, aid postpartum recovery, soften scar tissue, and revitalize the solar plexus center.

Traditional bodywork is most similar to a deep-tissue massage. The focus is on increasing flow, reducing stress, and releasing tension in the muscles, tissues, and fascia. Bodywork sessions are less structured, as they are highly adaptable to what each client needs in the moment. Though the aim is to work the full body, sessions are adjusted to what the client feels is most helpful. Bodywork sessions may include deep-tissue or gentle massage, stretching and movement of the limbs, and acupressure, among other techniques. Bodywork sessions do not include organ work, abdominal massage, or an assessment.

Sobada sessions are focused on the client’s physical and energetic alignment, and overall wellness. Bodywork sessions are focused on easing tension and promoting relaxation. All sobada and bodywork sessions include an opening and closing plática to explore what is coming up in the body, mind, and spirit.

  • Yes, my bodywork services are open to all. Men may receive any of the listed bodywork offerings. For children, I offer 45-minute massage sessions to infants under the age of 1, and gentle abdominal sobadas for children over the age of 12.

  • All bodywork sessions are held in the client’s home. All I’ll need is a clear space to set up my massage table or floor setting. If you’re unable to accommodate a home visit, please reach out and I can offer an alternative location.

Abdominal Sobada

The abdominal sobada is the most essential part of my bodywork practice, and my most recommended service. As the abdomen houses the majority of the body’s organs, this practice provides deep insight into a person's overall wellbeing, organ health, and energy levels. This 1-hour session is done on the floor with the client fully clothed, and just the abdomen exposed. This offering is for all people, including women, children, and men.

An abdominal sobada may help regulate the nervous system, aid digestion, relieve menstrual symptoms, clear stagnant energy, and ease pain. Abdominal sobadas can be especially helpful for postpartum women, as it can help the abdomen regain its center and coax the organs back into place. It is most appropriate starting 6-8 weeks after giving birth.

Full-Body Sobada

The full-body sobada is a 2-hour session that begins with the base of my sobada practice, the abdominal sobada. After working on the abdomen, we’ll shift our focus to the uterus, and the cuerdas in the legs and feet that connect to it (similar to meridians). For men, these cuerdas bring greater vitality and life force to their sacral center. For women, these cuerdas bring vitality and life force to the womb space, may boost fertility, ease menstrual symptoms, and bring on a delayed period. We’ll work with each area of the body during the session, using traditional massage techniques and rebozo therapy where needed. The full-body sobada holds all of the same benefits as the abdominal sobada, while providing much deeper and extended care and detailed focus on the uterus. The full-body sobada creates greater harmony between all energetic centers of the body.

Traditional Bodywork

Traditional bodywork is a therapeutic practice focused on releasing the fascia, soft tissues, and muscular system of the body. These intuitive sessions are tailored to each client and what's showing up in their body moment-to-moment. Similar to massage, bodywork helps decrease pain, release tension, improve mobility, support the nervous system, and harmonize the mind-body connection. My bodywork practice may also fold in other healing modalities such as acupressure, stretching, rebozo work, or heat therapy.

Prenatal & Postpartum Bodywork

Prenatal bodywork is specifically tailored to the needs of pregnant mothers, helping to relieve common aches and pains as the body transforms throughout pregnancy, especially in the back, hips, feet, neck, and shoulders. Postpartum bodywork is tailored to support a new mother’s physical and spiritual recovery after childbirth. This gentle treatment can help increase flow, warmth, relaxation, and harmony in the body as it heals. As with all bodywork and sobada offerings, each session will begin and end with a plática to address what's present in the body, mind, and spirit. These intuitive sessions are tailored to each client and what's showing up in their body moment-to-moment.

Cupping

Cupping is a traditional therapy where glass heated cups or suction cups are applied to the back of the body in order to increase circulation, release deeply held tension, and ease pain. As a standalone offering, the session will begin with a 20-minute back-neck-shoulders massage to loosen up the tissues. Cups are then applied and will sit for 10-20 minutes. A stand-alone session lasts about 45 minutes. Cupping can also be added to any sobada or bodywork offering for an extra $25.
